GREY COLLECTOR - Twitter Instructions
GREY COLLECTOR (2,108 shades of grey)
Honey bees limit their visits to a single species of plant during a foraging trip, which means pollen of one colour and its shades will be brought back to the hive at any given time. Please collect some 'grey' and Tweet to @GreyCollector. Hover over the grey cells to reveal the source. Click on the source to follow the collectors. Follow each other to sources of new greys.
'Grey Collector' is part of the Grey Matters project, which is an online collective intelligence art project with participants from around the world connecting via a variety of social media platforms to produce a series of works exploring the concept of grey – literally and metaphorically. This art work is partly a response to the extremism developing in public discourse, and the sound-bite, click-bait, post-truth culture that feeds it. Also, taking inspiration from the honey bees, the project explores the nature of collective intelligence and how creative problem solving communities can be created online - cyber micro-eutopias (realisable ‘good places’, not impossible ‘utopias’); or, more skeptically, at least altering our perceptions of our own identity, the notion of ‘Self’, our consciousness, and relationships with others in the Information Age. If you would like to make an artistic statement about the need for more reason, facts, nuance, and truth in public discourse, or you are attracted to the idea of creative collective intelligence working, or you just like the visual idea of grey, then I invite you to participate in the Grey Matters project.

"I just don't know how to use Twitter - is there no other way for me to participate?"
Many of my facebook friends want to take part in Grey Collector, but for various reasons are unable to tweet their photographs, which is an important concept of the work. However, I've been thinking again about the worker bees. Foraging bees often pass pollen to other worker bees to pack into the cells of the comb. So, I've decided to create a twitter account 'Grey Pollen Packer' that is an agent/proxy/generic alias for those that want to participate
So, if you cannot tweet to Grey Collector yourself, send your photograph to me on Facebook, with instructions:
1) Where to put the red ring to indicate the 'grey' you have collected
2) The name you are giving the grey
3) Where you took the photograph
4) Where on Grey Collector you want the grey to be placed (you can give a cell coordinate, or say 'Next to:....' if your photo relates to another one in some way).
OTHER IDEAS: A good way to study all of the partcipants work is to use the 'Greys Taxonomy' Here you can easily see all the photographs and the grey names. You may find that you like some of the ideas you see and this gives you an idea for your photograph. In this case, when you tweet your photograph, instead of giving a cell location for your grey (e.g. 20,10) you can simply write 'Next to:..........' and give the name of the photograph that inspired your photograph. There is an example below:
* If you do not have an Android or iOS device and wish to use your computer to send a tweet, you can watch the video below on making a red ring sticker:
